Flatscreen TV Buying Guide Part 4
TV and computer
For those who want to use the TV as a computer display, you should be looking at what resolution the TV can handle. Verify if HDMI supports 1:1 pixel mapping, for example, the TV properly displays the resolution sent to it. If it doesn`t have HDMI 1:1 pixel mapping support then the TV stretches the image outside the visible display area, so for example you will not be able to see the bottom toolbar of Windows.
Also check what resolution the selected TV model can handle. If it can only process VGA resolution 1024 x 768, the image will be strongly distorted. Virtually all TVs with 1080p (1920 x 1080) display can handle 1:1 from HDMI without any problems.
If you plan to use your TV as a large computer monitor focus on full HD LCD TVs. When connecting a plasma TV you will see “flickering” when watching static display of the desktop computer on it. This does not apply to game consoles (e.g. PlayStation 3) where in turn plasma TVs has no problems with blurry pictures.
Manufacturers usually offer a suitable video mode (PC or Game) for computer connections; however the picture is often considerably sharper, so you will not probably avoid minor changes in the picture settings.
