Flatscreen TV Buying Guide Part 3
4. LED TV and 3D TV
LED TV is a classic LCD TV with a modern backlight, which does not use the conventional cold cathode fluorescent lamp CCFL, but illuminating LEDs instead . Do not believe vendors or an advertising that it is a new, revolutionary technology. It’s really just a LCD TV.
LCD TVs with LED backlight may (but don`t have to) be very thin, which is what differ them at first sight from traditional CCFL backlit LCD TVs. Their image quality does not even have be better. The advantage of LED backlighting is lower power consumption and slightly better brightness control. The most expensive LED TVs can then specifically turn off some of the diodes, and thus achieve an improvement of the black color.
When selecting and purchasing always keep in mind that parameters are not everything. Do not let the salespeople influence you too much especially from the ones who will be highlighting “amazing” parameters and equipment, since the differences are really minimal. All TV manufacturers have several series of their products: more equiped ones and and also less expensive ones as well. If you do not like the TV, even after recommendations, look elsewhere. The selection is huge and the most important thing is your satisfaction.

The most important technical parameters. What to watch out for?
Whether you want to choose LCD TV online or ask questions about parameters in a store, pay attention to the following:
- Resolution: the higher the better. The basic these days should be 1366 x 768 pixels, up to 1920 × 1080 pixels.
- Brightness: the higher the better, but at home you will ever use values greater than 300 cd/m2. The minimum is generally 400 cd/m2, but it can be up to 550 cd/m2
- Contrast ratio: static and dynamic: the higher the better. The minimum value of static ratio is 800:1. The value of dynamic contrast is not of a great importance nowadays – 1 000 000:1 ratio and higher are standard for LCD TVs with LED backlight and plasma.
- Response time: the smaller the better. It is good enough when the indicated value is below 10 ms, the standard is 5 ms. The best are at 2 ms.
- Viewing Angle (H / V): the higher the better. A typical value should be about 178 o /178o. If it is less (170/170), be careful – maybe TV is equipped with an older LCD panel.
- Sound output (RMS): the higher the better. Larger TV should have at least 2 × 10 W. Smaller than 26 ” may have less.
- Screen modes: the more the better. The usual modes are 16:9, 4:3, 14:9, SMART, ZOOM and WIDE
-100 Hz: if you watch a lot of sports or movies, search for at least this parameter value. LCD TV with this image refresh rate ensures less risk of blurred fast motion images. Most recently we can see values of 200 Hz, 400 Hz and 800 Hz which guarantee an absolutely great picture even in very fast changes. 600 Hz for plasma TVs represents a different value than the standard refresh rate. There is no blurring at all in plasma TVs, so it is very suitable for sport fans.
- 3D: There are active and passive 3D TVs on the market and they are not mutually compatible. To watch 3D movies you need a 3D Blu-ray player. Some 3D TVs have a built-in conversion from 2D to 3D, but this feature is only suitable for certain programs (such as sports).
